Former Gamecock hurler Bill Landrum, pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates, picked up his 11th save of the season on Independence Day vs. the San Francisco Giants.
He tossed a perfect three-up, three-down ninth inning giving the home-standing Pirates a 5-3 victory leading into the annual post-game fireworks at Three Rivers Stadium. The scoreless inning lowered Landrum’s ERA to a remarkable 0.23 on the season. Landrum went on to have a great 1989 season. He posted a 1.69 ERA, and notched 26 saves for Pittsburgh.
Bill Landrum had a nice USC career as well. He lettered in 1978 and 1980, totaling 18 victories against only 4 losses. He also posted impressive ERAs of 2.78 and 2.91 respectively.
