Future Carolina baseball coach and Sumter native Bobby Richardson led the New York Yankees to a 14-3 shellacking of bitter rival Boston.Richardson, batting leadoff, went 3 for 5 in the game, with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
As a side note, Richardson had a first-hand view of the big sports story at that time. His Yankee teammates Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were in hot pursuit of Babe Ruth’s season home run record of 60. Maris, of course, went on to hit 61 dingers that season.
Bobby Richardson took over as baseball coach at Carolina nine years later, in 1970. He led the Gamecocks to a second-place finish in the 1975 College World Series, which began a great era for Gamecock Baseball.
