University officials decided against the use of Williams-Brice Stadium for a planned concert featuring the legendary Rolling Stones.
Although officials emphatically said no to a concert during the football season, a post-season show was not ruled out. Following the decision, USC President James Holderman appointed a committee to look into what future events were feasible at the stadium. A big concern the committee had was the safety factor of Williams-Brice.
“It is well-known that the upper decks of Williams-Brice Stadium sway,”a USC official was quoted as saying.
In time, The Rolling Stones did indeed play at Williams-Brice, as well as other performers such as U2, Paul McCartney, and Metallica. Maybe the biggest event held at the stadium was 1996’s Farm Aid benefit concert, featuring Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and Hootie and the Blowfish among others.
