The Gamecocks held their full scrimmage of the preseason, and the smattering of family and friends watching at the stadium got a nice preview of things to come for the season.
Although not even listed on the depth chart, freshman running back Marcus Lattimore stole the show. The Parade All-American carried the ball 7 times for 41 yards in the abbreviated scrimmage.
“Coach Spurrier’s a great coach. All I want to do is work for him, work to get better every day. Hopefully, I can get on the field,” Lattimore said following the scrimmage. And get on the field he did.
Lattimore was a unanimous choice for National Freshman of the Year after gaining 1,197 yards and scoring 17 TDs. Additionally, Marcus caught passes for 412 yards and 2 TDs. His most impressive performance came in Carolina’s biggest game of the year.
When USC went to the swamp with the SEC Eastern division championship on the line, Marcus was a man among boys. Lattimore powered the Gamecocks to a 36-14 whipping of Florida with 40 carries, 212 yards and 3 TDs.
