Seventeen people were killed when suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Students said they heard the fire alarm go off and thought it was a drill. "We went outside," said student Manuel Barraza, "I heard gunshots. I thought it was firecrackers. But after I heard the last shot I was like oh, no." Cruz, a 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is in custody.

Former S.C. Rep. Rick Quinn had this to say while speaking to the media after his sentencing on Monday at the Beaufort County Courthouse. In December, Quinn offered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of misconduct in office. On Monday, Judge Carmen Mullen sentenced him to 500 hours of community service and two-years probation.
Sharonda Jenkins of Ridgeland shares a portion of her essay she wrote while attending Denmark Technical College in Denmark, South Carolina, while earning a practical nursing degree. Jenkins had a baby when she was 12, kept and raised the child and has now earned her LPN when she was told she'd never amount to anything.

On February 8, 1968, police opened fire on a group of civil rights protesters outside of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Three people died and many more were injured, making the event one of the deadliest in the SC Civil Rights Movement.
