David Easlick Jr. and his wife, Katherine Coudriet, wanted to start a business to keep them busy, but didn't want to do something too serious.
So they opened a boutique on Lady's Island to sell clothing and accessories for dogs.
"My grandchildren call me Kiki, and they'll ask their mom, 'Where is Kiki?'" Coudriet said.
"My daughter will say, 'She's dressing up dogs.'
"What my grandchildren must think about me."
Haute Diggity Dawg, discriminating dog boutique, opened a month ago at 53B Sams Point Road.
The couple moved this year from Naples, Fla., after a pit stop during a trip to Coudriet's hometown of Richmond, Va.
Easlick, a history and genealogy buff, said he is a descendant of John "Tuscarora Jack" Barnwell and wanted to see Beaufort, where his family has deep roots.
They fell in love with the community, found a place to open a store and settled in. Coudriet is the merchandiser and does the shopping. Her son, Charlie, is the manager.
Easlick's job? "I don't know what," he says.
The store sells dog sweaters and coats, as well as dog tuxedos, football jerseys and hats, leashes, bandanas, luggage for traveling with a dog, pillow beds, canine-themed signs, and Christmas decorations and ornaments.
Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
