About 450 dogs from around the nation will compete in a number of categories at this year’s Hilton Head Island Kennel Club Dog Show at Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School in Ridgeland this Saturday and Sunday.
The event is being hosted by the Hilton Head Island Kennel Club, which is part of the American Kennel Club.
Participants in the Hilton Head Island show can win points that will help them to automatically qualify for the upcoming Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in February.
Dogs compete in multiple categories, accumulating points throughout the season, and the top five dogs in each category automatically qualify for Westminster, with the rest being chosen by lottery.
All American Kennel Club-recognized breeds can participate in the show, which will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the competition for best in show beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Each day’s shows are self-contained, with a winner declared by day’s end, so the weekend will see two Best-In-Show winners.
