Eleven Columbia Police officers were promoted Friday afternoon, and Chief Tandy Carter told them to "build a Columbia Police Department for the future."

Carter said two-thirds of the department's officers were hired within the last four years and it's important for the department to establish a foundation of experienced officers.

Officers receiving promotions were: Sgt. Jeffery Dickey, Sgt. Darin Dougherty, Sgt. Ronald Felder, Sgt. Derek Miller, Sgt. Chris Stokes, Cpl. Michael Blair, Cpl. Bryant Ham, Cpl. Mary Holmes, Cpl. Christopher Jolly, Cpl. Wallis Lacey and Investigator James Charley.
