USC women earn No. 2 seed, hosting honors

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- South Carolina on Monday earned a No. 2 seed in this year's field of 64 teams that will compete for the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.

The Gamecocks (17-3-2) also secured a spot as a host site for the first round and will face Davidson (12-9-1) on Friday. Also facing off Friday in the games hosted by USC are Duke (8-8-4) and Rutgers (13-3-4).

Joining USC as No. 2 seeds are Boston College, Portland and Notre Dame.

The four No. 1 seeds are Stanford, North Carolina, California and Florida State.

The Gamecocks on Sunday beat LSU on penalties, 8-7, to win the program's first SEC tournament championship.

It was the first SEC title won by a South Carolina team since the baseball team’s 2004 crown
