Chapin student charged with gun at school

A Chapin High School student was charged with carrying a weapon on to the campus last week.

Joshua Miles, 17, was arrested after school officials told Lexington County deputies that students reported seeking him display a pistol briefly on Nov. 4.

Miles told deputies he forgot the .25-caliber pistol was stuck in a jacket after he went bird hunting, according to an incident report.

3 people hurt, road closed as plane crashes

GREENVILLE - A small plane crash Monday sent three people to the hospital and caused a highway to be closed for a time.

The multi-engine King Air B200 went down short of the runway at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport around 10:15 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

Neal McGrail, chief operating officer for Stevens Aviation, said the plane had come to the Greenville-based company for service and was on a test flight when it crashed.

Two Stevens avionics technicians on the plane when it crashed were being treated at the hospital Monday. Derrick Holliday was in serious but stable condition, and Edward Wilk was listed in fair condition, McGrail said.

McGrail said the pilot, whose name he did not release, did not work for Stevens and was in serious but stable condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, and McGrail said he did not think it was related to any of the maintenance tests.

Stevens has been at the airport for about 60 years.

The plane crashed while attempting to land, hitting a guard rail and skipping over S.C. 14 before eventually landing on grass, airport spokeswoman Rosylin Weston told the Greenville News. No cars were hit, and the highway was later reopened.

The plane is registered to MDTR Holdings LLC in Virginia Beach, Va. FlightAware.com shows that the plane flew from Norfolk, Va., to Greenville Sunday night

There was no fire and the aircraft appeared to be intact, Weston said.

Ex-teacher, coach charged with sex contact with student

SUMTER - A former high school teacher and coach has been arrested and charged after police say he had sexual contact with a 16-year-old female student.

The (Sumter) Item reported Monday that 33-year-old Edward Antonio Hubbard is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Hubbard also is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disseminating obscene materials. He is accused of showing pornography and giving alcohol to the student.

Hubbard resigned as a teacher at Lakewood High School. The newspaper said he had been investigated previously for claims he had a sexual relationship with a student while teaching at another school, but no charges were filed.

Man killed by car as he put yard waste by road

NORTH AUGUSTA - Authorities say a man stacking yard waste by the road has been struck and killed by a car.

News outlets reported that 72-year-old William Adams was hit by a car Sunday afternoon while in the yard of his North Augusta home.

Authorities said Adams had trimmed some plants and bushes and was putting the trimmings by the road when he was hit.

Investigators said the driver first thought she hit a trash can, but returned to the scene when she realized she might have hit a person. North Augusta authorities are investigating whether charges should be filed.
