Columbia City Council members Wednesday approved a $1 million commitment in hospitality tax dollars over five years to the State Museum Foundation, so it can move forward with a planned $20.5 million expansion.
Councilman Kirkman Finlay voted against the plan, saying he was uncomfortable making a multiyear commitment with what he called an "unstable funding source."
Other council members pointed out the commitment was subject to the necessary tax collections and could be terminated at any time.
The State Museum plans to add a planetarium, observatory and 4-D theater.
