Getting into The Cup costs more

This week, we’re previewing one of spring’s most popular traditions, The Carolina Cup, set for Saturday in Camden.

The Carolina Cup draws nearly 70,000 people.

Many have been ticket-holders for years, while others may be attending for the first time — and often get hooked.

No matter which category you fall into, ticket prices are on the rise. Last year, general admission at the gate was $25; this year, it’s $35.

But there’s one break: The $10 fee for general admission parking is being waived.

George Bugenske, of Chapin, who has attended the Cup for 25 years, said while it’s a small increase, rising ticket prices are deterring some.

“This is just one more thing to turn people off,” he said. “We’ll always go, but we lose some of our crowd because of the price.”

Blame the cost increase, in part, on the rising cost of fuel.

“Expenses have skyrocketed,” said Wendy Kingsley, marketing director for The Carolina Cup Racing Association. “The mowing alone (for Springdale’s 600 acres) is more because of fuel.”

If you’re planning to buy your ticket at the gate, it’s cash only.
