Countdown to The Carolina Cup

This week, we have been previewing one of spring’s most popular traditions, The Carolina Cup, set for Saturday at Camden’s Springdale Race Course. It’s one of the Midlands’ largest outdoor parties, with nearly 70,000 expected. And, here’s what you can expect if you plan to go:

THE WEATHER

Saturday’s forecast: Partly sunny and breezy with a 20 percent chance of mud on your fancy shoes. Actually, it’s a 20 percent chance of showers, with highs in the mid-60s and winds 10 to 15 mph.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

It’s all about people-watching at The Cup.

So naturally, you’ll want to look good.

The Carolina Cup Racing Association has a suggested dress code:

• For the grandstand and front row paddock: Men should wear sport coats and ties, and women should wear dresses and hats.

• For the infield, south and west rails and College Park: Men should wear oxford cloth shirts, ties and slacks, and women should wear sundresses and hats.

And, fashionistas, take note: Lilly Pulitzer — known for mostly pink and green clothing inspired by the Palm Beach lifestyle — is partnering with Belk as a Cup sponsor. Their tent, featuring special activities, will be near College Park.

WHAT TO BRING

• If you’re buying your ticket at the gate, $35 in cash

• Shades and sunscreen

• Food and drinks

• Blankets and chairs

WHAT NOT TO BRING

• Glass containers

• Gas or charcoal grills

• Tents with corporate logos

• Pets of any kind

AFTER THE RACE

Camden is about more than horses. Here are two ideas for things to do after the race:

• Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site: Soak up a little history at the 107-acre outdoor museum that commemorates one of the most important battles in the Revolutionary War. The site is on U.S. 521 between town and I-20 (exit 98.

• Antique shopping: About 30 shops line the main streets, especially on DeKalb and South Broad downtown. It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon looking at fine antiques and rustic stuff.

IF YOU’RE GOING

• Hours: Gates open at 9 a.m., with the first race at 1:30 p.m.

• Race location: Springdale Race Course, 200 Knights Hill Road

• Race schedules and other details: (803) 432-6513 or www.carolina-cup.org
