The Buzz

• Rep. Bakari Sellers — esquire and bachelor

A hearty congratulations to Rep. Bakari Sellers, D-Orangeburg, who graduated from the University of South Carolina’s School of Law this week.

And just in time, as the General Assembly needs more lawyers.

The Buzz mentions this because Sellers told The Buzz that our publishing his $10,400 salary as a state lawmaker did little to impress the women of the Columbia area.

Though Sellers still needs to pass the bar exam, The Buzz thinks ladies might want to reconsider their previous verdict.

REVISIONIST HISTORY

Surfing the Web this week — The Buzz is old school — we came across the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women’s Web site.

Among photos of red-clad ladies standing on the State House steps and with Gov. Mark Sanford was another shot that caught our eye.

In it, one member of the group proudly poses before a stately portrait — of former Democratic Gov. Dick Riley.

ANDRE WHO?

The Buzz was hanging around the State House when a group of third-graders touring the building were asked by a tour guide: Who’s the lieutenant governor?

The students’ answer: Silence.

When they were asked to name the governor, nearly every hand went up. According to the tour guide, it’s not unusual for children that age to know who the governor is but not know who SC2 is.

But what about the chaperone who asked The Buzz to identify the guy walking the grounds that morning in shorts and a golf shirt? “He looks familiar,” she said. It was none other than Bauer.

The lieutenant governor may have been unrecognizable because he wasn’t in “uniform.” Later that morning, Bauer was wearing a suit, talking to the media about the hot line his Office on Aging was establishing to report scams against seniors.

The chaperone, seeing Bauer in a suit, instantly recognized him.
