A pediatric health professional has been named Palmetto Health’s top resident.
Dr. Carryn Rice of the hospital’s pediatric residency program is the 2009 Resident of the Year.
Rice was selected from more than 200 medical and dental residents. She was recognized during a recent Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine annual reception.
“Carryn exemplifies humanism, and her dedication to the care of her patients is unrivaled,” Dr. Rob Holleman, program director for the Department of Pediatrics, said in his nomination.
He also noted Rice’s “investment of time in reaching out to underserved populations” as well as her “care for children with special needs.”
Rice will remain in the area and practice at Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center.
There are at least 100 reasons to celebrate the life of Gladys Phillips.
The longtime A.C. Flora High School teacher celebrated her 100th birthday Sunday at Still Hopes in West Columbia.
Phillips was born in Woodruff but spent most of her life in the Columbia area. She began teaching high school math in 1942 in Columbia and taught at A.C. Flora for more than 30 years.
Phillips is a longtime member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, where she has been part of the Methodist Women’s Circle.
Calling all artists.
The Saluda Shoals Foundation and Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission are seeking artists from various mediums to take part in this fall’s “Unearth, A Celebration of Naturally Inspired Art.”
The event — which showcases visual, performing and literary arts in an outdoor setting — will run Oct. 1-4 at Saluda Shoals Park.
During the week, select artists will share their creative ideas and talents with park guests.
Applications can include but are not limited to art demonstrations and interpretation, musical/dance performances, theatrical vignettes and poetry readings. Selected artists will be awarded a $125 stipend to help cover costs associated with participation.
