A bridge in Hopkins will be named for a pair of sisters who died there in the summer of 2002.

Thursday, the state highway commission voted to name the Cabin Creek Road bridge for Candacy and Darcel Sanders.

The young women, ages 24 and 18, ran their car off the road on a wet night and drove into the creek, where they drowned. Their car was not found for two months.

Richland Councilman Norman Jackson, who initiated the bridge naming at the request of residents, said a ceremony will be held, probably in the spring, after a new bridge over the creek is done.

The county will pay for signs on each end of the bridge, $500 at the most, a highway department spokesman said.
