Edisto entryway is national scenic road

EDISTO - The highway leading onto Edisto Island has been designated a national scenic road.

S.C. 174 is a tree-canopied, 17-mile stretch that crosses salt marshes, creeks, forests and farmland, from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.

It is the fourth road in the state to have the designation, according to a news release Wednesday from the S.C. Department of Transportation.

The others are:

- Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway: S.C. 11 from I-85 in Oconee County to Gaffney

- Savannah River National Scenic Byway: From the intersection of S.C. 11 and S.C. 24 in Oconee County to the Georgia state line

- Ashley River Road National Scenic Byway: S.C. 61 in Charleston County, from Church Creek Bridge for 10 miles north.

The Edisto Island highway was designated a state scenic highway in 1988 and a national scenic highway last week.

According to the news release, the Edisto Island Preservation Alliance will manage a long-term plan to preserve the road's "intrinsic qualities."
