Unhappy homecoming for Ridge View in loss

BLYTHEWOOD - Homecoming opponent, huh?

Rock Hill hammered Ridge View 63-0 on Friday, ruining the Blazers' Homecoming and keeping their perfect season going with a mix of big plays on offense in the Region 4-4A opener for both teams.

Rock Hill (7-0) scored on its first three possessions and turned a Blazers fumble into Jatavius Stewart's 30-yard touchdown recovery. Stewart also snuck in a 4-yard score and took a shovel pass from Randall Dixon for a 12-yard score.

The Bearcats outgained Ridge View 272-75 in the first half, sacking quarterback Jalen Perry four times. Dre Williams intercepted one pass, broke up another and his long punt return set up another touchdown.

And if there was any doubt after Rock Hill's dominance after halftime, it was gone after Jamal Tyler ran 45 yards on the first play of the third quarter. Two plays later, Dixon floated a 5-yard touchdown pass to Xavier McFadden for a 35-0 lead.

All Rock Hill did after that was score on the first play of each of its next two possessions.

Stewart danced into the end zone on the receiving end of an 88-yard catch-and-run for his fifth score of the evening. He finished with 67 rushing yards, 100 receiving, one fumble recovery and then returned in the fourth quarter to throw a 6-yard score to Trey Murdock.

"When the offense is clicking like this, it doesn't matter where they put me," Stewart said. "If they think I'm going to run, I'll just throw it to Jamal or Xavier. It's fun to be playing like this."

"That's what we want to do with him as we get into region," Rock Hill coach Joe Montgomery said. "We want to keep switching him around so teams don't know how to defend him."

The Bearcats scored on all but three possessions and did not punt until 11:26 remained in the game. Of the three they did not score on, one was the punt, one was a fourth down at the end of the first half and the last was a kneel-down on the last play of the game - at the Blazers' 7-yard-line.

But Montgomery was not concerned with overconfidence after such a comfortable win.

"These kids come to practice focused every day," he said. "If they don't, they run hills. But we've really only had one bad practice recently."
