Player of the Year: Nevada Minard
Class: Eighth Grade
School: Pelion
What she did: Won bronze in the 1,600 meters at the state meet with a season-best time of 5 minutes, 39.73 seconds ... Placed fourth in the 3,200 (season-best 12:33.60).
She joined the track team because: “My coach said I was too good not to do it.”
Her most memorable win: “That was the mile race (in the 2008 state finals). It was the finish, because I was neck-and-neck with another girl, and I beat her by like eight-tenths of a second.”
What she’s looking forward to in high school: “You get to do a lot more stuff. Hopefully I’ll get to do the high school rodeo with my horse, Charlie.”
The best thing about Charlie: “He was a Christmas present three years ago. My mommy and daddy don’t own him; he’s in my name; and I was so excited.”
The hardest part of owning a horse: “I don’t know. There’s not really a hard part for me because I know so much about horses and what to do with them. Some people just have horses to look at them out in the pasture, but not me.”
Her favorite breed of horse: “Charlie’s an Overo paint horse, and he’s my favorite.”
Another sport she’d like to try: “Basketball. I’ve never really tried that.”
A sport she won’t try again: “Soccer.”
