Milestones

COMMUNITY

COLUMBIA GREEN has awarded $11,000 in neighborhood and tree initiative grants for projects in the Columbia area. Winners of the neighborhood grants include Ashewood Neighborhood Association, Downtown Neighborhood Association, Historic Waverly Neighborhood, Strathaven Forest Subdivision, University Hills Neighborhood Association and the W. Gordon Belser Arboretum. Completion of each project is expected by June. Tree Initiative grants of $2,500 each went to the YMCA of Columbia for landscaping of the new Lexington facility and the Colonial Heights Neighborhood Association for tree plantings along Academy and Marshall streets.

DWIGHT FLOYD of Irmo has been inducted into the St. Andrews Rotary Club. Floyd is a partner in the law firm of Parker Poe Adams and Bernstein.

SGT. KIMBERLY MYERS of the Richland County Sheriff's Department has received the President's Award from the S.C. Corrections Association. Sgt. Myers was recognized for her work with the Sheriff's Department's Youth Arbitration Program and the S.C. Corrections Association's Women's Task Force.

CORPORATE

MUNGO HOMES raised nearly $370,000 plus $15,858 in-kind donations for the Feed Your Neighbor campaign to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank. Donations are encouraged throughout the year and may be made online at www.harvesthope.org.

MILITARY

NAVY SEAMAN BRIAN T. DEVEREAUX has completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. The son of Karen A. Devereaux of Lexington and James R. Devereaux of Columbia, he is a 2008 graduate of Dreher High School.

ARMY SPEC. JOSHUA N. CHITTICK has completed basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 1999 graduate of Irmo High School.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT JANIE E. CHAMBERS has completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. The daughter of Naomi R. and Harry R. Chambers of Camden, she is a 2008 graduate of Camden High School.

ARMY RESERVE PFC. KYLE L. GREEN has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. The son of Mary Winsted of Columbia, Green is a 2006 graduate of Richland Northeast High School.

COAST GUARD SEAMAN KRYSTEN C. KASPRZYK has completed training at the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, Cape May, N.J. The daughter of Cheryl D. and David S. Kasprzyk of Columbia, she is a 2008 graduate of Spring Valley High School.

ARMY RESERVE PFC. COBY D. ODOM has completed basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. The daughter of Thea C. Odom of Columbia, he is a 2008 graduate of Eau Claire High School.

TRAVIS J. SHAW has completed the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the course; upon completion of the course, the ROTC program and graduation from college, they are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve. The son of Carl S. and Georgia R. Shaw of Columbia, he is a 2004 graduate of Eau Claire High School, received a bachelor's degree in 2008 from North Greenville University and attends Furman University.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PVT. ASHLEY M. BAUGHMAN has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. The daughter of Helen Morris of Leesville, Baughman is a 2009 graduate of Gilbert High School.

ARMY PVT. HASSAN H. WILLIAMS has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. The son of Aida Pugh of West Columbia, Williams is a 2009 graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School.

LEXINGTON COUNTY VOLUNTEER GUARDIAN AD LITEM PROGRAM is seeking people to serve as advocates for children who come into foster care because of abuse or neglect. GAL volunteers work with all agencies involved with the child, including the Department of Social Services, the Family Court, school and counselors. Volunteers must be at least 21, have the desire to work with children, the ability to pass background checks and complete the 30-hour training program.
