MARY KATE BELL BREARLEY GLASSER was presented a concurrent resolution by S.C. Rep. Chip Huggins, R-Lexington, in recognition of her being named South Carolina’s Mother of the Year. The retired educator and mother of four was honored at the April 9 Irmo Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

SCOTT AEBERSOLD has earned the designation of Eagle Scout. His project included the design and layout of an orienteering trail at Harbison State Forest. The son of Tom and Kris Aebersold of Columbia, the Dutch Fork High School senior will attend the University of Alabama School of Engineering.

NIKKI YANCEY of Columbia won the title of Queen of Roses 2008 at the recent pageant, held in Orangeburg April 12. Batesburg-Leesville residents Ariel Fox and Meredith Hoffman finished first and second, respectively.

ARMY PFC. SABRINA L. JONES has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. The daughter of Laverne Goodwin of Columbia, Jones is a graduate of Columbia High School and Midlands Technical College.

AIRMAN GREGORY T. SHORT has completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2007 graduate of Columbia High School.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PVT. JAMAR M. JONES has completed basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. The son of Alfreida Neely of Columbia, Jones is a 2007 graduate of Richland Northeast High School.

AIRMAN DETRICK R. MODISETTE has completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Mames and Bobbie Modisette of Columbia, he is a 2007 graduate of Blythewood High School.

ARMY PFC. BRIAN J. MARQUIS, a financial management technician assigned to the 8th Finance Battalion, has arrived for duty at Kaiserslauten, Germany. The son of Gary B. and Debra J. Marquis of Columbia, he is a 1997 graduate of Richland Northeast High School.

ARMY RESERVE PVT. EDDIE GOODWIN has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson. The son of Yolanda Goodwin of Columbia, he is a 2006 graduate of C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy.

NAVY CMDR. DANA R. GORDON has assumed command of the HSL-42 “Proud Warriors” helicopter squadron in Jacksonville, Fla. He is the son of Bobby and Delores Gordon of Columbia.

AIRMAN 1st CLASS COURTNEY B. JAMES has completed basic military training with the distinction of honor graduate at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The son of Sammy James of Columbia, he is 2002 graduate of Keenan High School.

CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS, a cell phone recycling program and Smith Turf & Irrigation have teamed up to distribute prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas. About half of the phones are reconditioned and resold, the rest are dismantled and recycled to reclaim gold, silver, platinum, copper wiring from chargers, nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs and plastic from cases and accessories. REGENCY HOSPICE has openings this summer for volunteers who want to gain experience in geriatric care and nonmedical home. Free training for adults willing to sit with patients, run errands, make phone calls or help with related office tasks. No medical background needed; reliable transportation a must. ROAD TO RECOVERY is a program that provides cancer patients with transportation to and from treatments. Training is scheduled weekly at the American Cancer Society office, 128 Stonemark Lane. GREYHOUND LIFESAVERS is looking for foster parents for retired racing greyhounds. Volunteers will be provided the dog, collar and lead, food, bowls, beds, jackets and medical expenses as needed. Foster parents provide love and attention, social training, toys, a bed or two, a baby gate and time to show the foster dog when a potential adopter is interested. RICHLAND COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES is seeking foster parents for infants through teens in the legal custody of the Department of Social Services.
