District names Teacher of the Year

By JOY L. WOODSON - jwoodson@thestate.com

The five finalists nervously sat through a long dinner, filled with speeches, pictures and applause.

Only one would be chosen as Kershaw County’s newest Teacher of the Year.

And, when Angie Lawson, a music teacher at Pine Tree Hill Elementary, heard her name called, it was surreal.

“I’m very honored and thrilled and nervous and shaking to be Teacher of the Year,” Lawson said after receiving a standing ovation from a room full of her colleagues.

“I truly feel that we all should share the spotlight tonight.”

Lawson, a music specialist for 10 years, was named the district’s top teacher Monday during a banquet. Lisa Twitty, a Camden High math teacher, was first alternate.

Lawson, along with the district’s Principal of the Year, Dan Matthews, won the use of a new Ford Milan from James Ervin Automotive Group.

In a time when parents are asking for more music and art programs, superintendent Frank Morgan said it was fitting that a music teacher won the night’s honor.

“I think that speaks volumes in the importance of that area in everything that we do,” he said.

A panel of judges said Lawson’s varied teaching methods stood out because they provided a seamless integration of all subjects, not just music.

Lee Walker, interim principal at Pine Tree Hill, said Lawson’s positive attitude and noteworthy efforts are examples to other teachers and students.

“She supports school initiatives in such a positive manner and always puts children first,” she said.

Lawson said her key to reaching students starts by creating an accepting environment where efforts are rewarded. She never saw herself doing any other profession.

“I have a chance to reach a child who is not exceeding in the classroom,” she said. “I always tell them, ‘I want to see you try.
