DISTRICT NEWS

LEXINGTON 5 has announced its Citizenship Stars for volunteering their time to community service projects over the summer. They provided toys, books, clothing and food for the Nurturing Center, books for the S.C. Interfaith Council, picked up and recycled trash in the community, donated food to food pantries, raised money for PAALS and made donations to Sharing God's Love.

SPRING VALLEY TEACHER JOSH DREWS has been named 2009 Art Educator of the Year by the S.C. Art Education Association.

SPRING VALLEY'S MARCHING BAND placed second out of 20 bands in the September Palmetto Esprit de Corps Invitational.

LORIE McDUFFIE, an instructor in Spring Valley's health technology department, has received an Anatomy in Clay grant worth $4,000 from the State Department of Education and the S.C. Hospital Association. The grant provides health and science teachers with a new curriculum kit to teach anatomy.

DISTRICT NEWS

RIDGE VIEW AND BLYTHEWOOD HIGH SCHOOLS will host the 2009 Tournament of Bands Saturday at Blythewood High, 10901 Wilson Blvd. Tickets will be sold at the gate, which opens at 11:45 a.m. Adults, $7, students through grade 12, $5; ages 5 and younger, free. (803) 608-7407

LUGOFF ELEMENTARY

LUGOFF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL will hold a fall carnival 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 994 Ridgeway Road. Event will feature inflatables, horses, carnival games, bake sale, book walk, karaoke, face painting, food and more.

LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL'S October Thirst Lectures, 6 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium, will feature senior Ashley Johnson's presentation on "Fireworks: Past, Present, and Right Now!" Social studies teacher Sally Thornton will speak on "History vs. Hollywood: Band of Brothers," focusing on the accuracy of the HBO presentation and its portrayal of Easy Company of the 101st Airborne, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Each talk is 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A period; refreshments will be served between lectures.

MIDLANDS MATH AND BUSINESS ACADEMY

MARY PERRY was one of six student at the Richland 1 charter school to earn passing scores on the 2008-09 Algebra I test administered through the S.C. End-of-Course Examination Program.

KIMBERLY ROBERTS, educator and percussionist with Pantasia Creative Learning, is wrapping up her artist-in-residence stint at Saluda River Academy for the Arts. EMILY HARRUFF, a senior at the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. The daughter of Greg and Liam Harruff of Columbia, she attended Irmo High School before being accepted to GSSM.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF CAYCE/WEST COLUMBIA AND THE WEST METRO ROTARY CLUB presented 1,000 dictionaries to third-graders in Lexington 2, 4 and private schools in the Cayce-West Columbia area. The dictionaries are designed and written for third grade-level students.

JAMES McMANUS JR., a senior at the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. The son of Mr. and Mrs. James McManus of Lexington, he attended Lexington High School before being accepted to GSSM.

PALMETTOPRIDE is accepting applications for the Challenge for the Environment grant through Oct. 26. Available to any accredited school, the grant is designed to get elementary, middle or high school students involved in activities that focus on the importance of keeping the state clean and attractive while promoting a sense of pride in the community. www.palmettopride.org

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHARLESTON has announced its Passion for Fashion Competition 2010. The competition consists of two categories: Fashion Design, and Fashion Marketing and Merchandising and Retail Management. The winner in each category will earn a full tuition scholarship, a trip to New York City for Fashion Week, a meet-and-greet at Seventeen Magazine offices and a $500 shopping spree. Eligible students must be graduating high school seniors with a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher, write an essay describing their interest in fashion and submit a finished, originally designed evening wear garment and process book for the Fashion Design category. Fashion Marketing and Merchandising and Retail Management entrants will create a product or plan. An entry information session is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Art Institute of Charleston, 24 N. Market St. Deadline for entries is Nov. 20. SOUTHERN WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY is participating in the Yellow Ribbon program, a scholarship initiative for veterans. The scholarship, together with matching funds from the VA, covers all tuition and fees at Southern Wesleyan that are not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. The university offers tuition discounts to active duty military, National Guard and Reserve members as well as spouses of active duty military. THE ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION is accepting applications through Nov. 2 for 500 scholarships worth more than $2.2 million. Eighteen top winners will receive $8,000-$80,000 over four years; the remaining 482 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships over four years. The Most Valuable Student program is open to all high school seniors who are United States citizens; males and females compete separately and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Winners will be announced April 1. Applications available at schools or at www.elks.org/enf/scholars.

NOMINATIONS ARE BEING accepted through Jan. 8 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Keeper Scholarships. The nominee must be a student ages 18 and younger with a grade-point average of 2.0 or above and a minimum of one year of community service. THE ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION is accepting applications through Jan. 8 for 250 four-year $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks members. The contest is open to any high school senior who is the child, grandchild, stepchild, step-grandchild or legal ward of an Elk who has been a member in good standing for at least two years.
