Ready to take off

What makes it hot: Easy access to I-77 to reach Columbia Metropolitan Airport and other parts of the area

Why now? SCANA, the only Fortune 500 company in South Carolina, has moved its new headquarters there. The corporate parent of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. largely will control what rises around the complex. A new industrial park of 500 acres is opening nearby. Plans for a new park along the Congaree River add to the appeal. But the flood plain limits what can be built.

BY THE NUMBERS

- The corridor stretches 2 1/2 miles from the center of the city to I-77.

- There are 1,000 employees at SCANA headquarters and another 721 at it operations center nearby.
