Intel, founded in 1968, is the world’s largest semi-conductor company and inventor of the microprocessors found in most personal computers.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company combines development prowess with a strong manufacturing base. Its main competitor is Microsoft.
Intel’s “Intel Inside” advertising campaign of the 1990s made it and its Pentium processor household names.
In 2007, Intel — short for “integrated electronics” — had nearly 100,000 employees worldwide and revenues of $38.8 billion. Its Fortune 500 ranking in 2008 was 60th, down from 49th in 2005.
