Dead man identified and investigation continues
The man shot and killed late Friday outside Club Element in a bizarre parking lot incident near the 200 block of Columbia Mall Boulevard has been identified as Thai Quoc Tran , 26, of the 1600 block of Bywood Drive.
Tran was shot multiple times in his vehicle and died at the scene in the club parking lot, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
An autopsy revealed he died of complications of multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, Watts said.
A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting may have happened this way: First, Tran's vehicle struck several other vehicles and came to a stop. A security guard reached through an open car window to try to grab the keys. The guard was injured when the car took off again.
Other security guards from the club then opened fire at the vehicle, .
The security officer who was injured by Tran's car was taken to a local hospital with a broken leg. He is in stable condition, a sheriff's spokesman said Monday morning.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department is investigating and has made no decision as to whether the shooting was justified or not.
"We are still gathering facts and looking for anybody who may have seen this," said department spokesman Curtis Wilson. "We want to make sure we look at every angle before we make a decision."
