Lexington County authorities are investigating why a man and a woman were shot early Monday morning outside a West Columbia apartment complex.
The man died from his injuries and the woman was undergoing treatment at Lexington Medical Center, said Maj. John Allard, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department. The department is asking for the public’s help in identifying anyone who might have been involved.
“We really don’t know what led up to the shooting,” Allard said. “We don’t know the exact circumstances of the shooting.”
Terance Terell Jackson, 33, of Comanchee Trail in West Columbia died from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso, according to a report from the Lexington County coroner. Bullets lacerated his aorta and lungs and he died within minutes, the coroner’s report said.
A 24-year-old woman from Cheraw, who is not being identified because she is a witness to a violent crime, was wounded when she was shot in the lower abdomen, the Sheriff’s Department reported. The woman was in Lexington Medical Center’s intensive care unit. She has been able to speak briefly with investigators.
Jackson and the woman were sitting in the front seat of a red, two-door Buick sedan at 2:12 a.m. Monday at an apartment complex on Riverbend Drive when they were shot. Neither of the two lived at the complex, Allard said.
The woman sought help from people at the apartment complex after the shooting, the Sheriff’s Department said. Neighbors also heard the gunshots.
The two had met about a week ago at Columbia Farms where both were employed. They had been to a bar earlier in the night, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff’s investigators are working on the case and searching for a motive.
