The parent company for Mercedes-Benz plans to expand its North Charleston van-production plant and add at least 1,200 jobs, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported Monday.
The company would not comment, but a news conference is set for Friday morning at the plant.
People familiar with the deal told the newspaper the company plans to start making Mercedes-Benz Sprinters vans from scratch at the factory to meet demand in North America.
To avoid stiff import tariffs, the utility vans are made in Germany, partially disassembled and then reassembled in North Charleston.
Last week, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey told City Council he expects a major economic development announcement on Friday.
