Former SC Gov. Richard W. Riley has been selected to receive the 2013 Global Vision Award from the Columbia World Affairs Council. Riley served as governor from 1979-1987, during which time he established the Education Improvement Act, the Employment Revitalization Act and The S.C. Research Authority. He also was instrumental in passing a constitutional amendment to create a state reserve fund. Riley served as the U.S. secretary of education from 1993-2001. The award recognizes his impact on the state, as well as his efforts to project the state globally.
