University of South Carolina officials and alumni gathered Friday to break ground on the new Alumni Center at Lincoln and Senate streets in the Vista. The three-story, 65,000-square-foot building is expected to be complete by May 2015 and will be home to the My Carolina Alumni Association. The center is expected to help connect alumni to students and each other and will serve as “the pulse, the heartbeat and the epicenter for Carolina alumni worldwide,” USC President Harris Pastides said in a release. The university has 270,000 living alumni. The $26.6 million center, designed by Columbia-based architect LS3P, is being privately funded, the university said. It will include indoor and outdoor meeting spaces for a range of events – from networking to weddings.
