Another nearly 800 student beds could be coming to the Bluff Road corridor near Williams-Brice Stadium if the city approves yet another private student dormitory, continuing the city’s recent student housing boom.
Planned for 26 acres on National Guard Road less than a half-mile from the University Oaks apartments, the 792-bed, 198-unit, 17-building apartment complex would push to nearly 5,000 the number of beds in private developments aimed at students that plan to open in the next several years, if they all come to fruition.
An Athens, Ga.-based group called Practice Field LLC is listed as the property owner on the application to the city. The civil engineering firm of Williams and Associates, also of Athens, is designing the project.
Williams and Associates have designed other student housing developments, including projects in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and San Marcos, Texas.
The city Planning Commission is likely to approve the project’s site plan, according to city planning administrator John Fellows.
The development mirrors the style of existing student apartment complexes in the area south of downtown such as Stadium Suites and the Woodlands, with renderings submitted to the city showing the site could include a clubhouse, pool and athletic courts.
According to the developers’ application to the city, all the units are planned as four bedrooms.
Efforts to reach Practice Field LLC were unsuccessful Wednesday. No other details, including the cost of the project or a possible construction timeline, were immediately available.
The Planning Commission will consider the site plan at its Jan. 5 meeting. City Council still must approve the project if the planning commission signs off on it.
