Yet another student housing project is coming to Columbia.
An Irmo developer plans to build a 198-unit, 792-bedroom apartment complex targeted to University of South Carolina students on National Guard Road near Willliams-Brice Stadium, according to records filed with the Columbia Planning Commission.
The 26-acre development joins six other private dormitories in downtown Columbia and another being built by USC in conjunction with an Atlanta developer.
The new project, by Lovett Properties owner Donald Lovett, differs from the downtown project in that students would have to drive or be bused to campus, similar to other large apartment complexes along Bluff Road.
Never miss a local story.
The complex would join the 662-bed University Oaks that opened on National Guard Road in 2008.
The apartments are planned for property directly behind the South Carolina Gamecock football team's new practice facilities on the former State Farmers Market site.
Lovett could not be reached immediately for comment.
