2004-2005 - Lexington County and Richland County square off to land a new $40 million State Farmers Market after a plan to renovate the old one on Bluff Road is rejected by state officials as too expensive.
February 2007 - State officials decide to build a new $60 million market on 196 acres on Pineview Road in Richland County. County purchases property for $4 million and the state spends $2.5 million to improve it.
September 2007 - Large wholesalers reject the Richland County site because they say rent on warehouses is too expensive.
April 2008 - State approves a Lexington County location. The market is to be built by private developers with state assistance. Large wholesalers plan to build their own facilities there.
August 2008 - Groundbreaking is held on the new site on Charleston Highway.
December 2009 - State officials say market won't open until June, rather than March, because rain delayed construction.
February - Leases for Bluff Road tenants are extended until the new market opens.
