Former SCANA chief Gressette dies at 81

Lawrence Gressette Jr., former SCANA utility chief, noted civic and charity leader and long-serving university board chairman died Friday in Columbia.

Gressette, a son of the late state Senate president pro tempore and Judiciary Committee chairman L. Marion Gressette, was 81.

Gressette served as chairman of the board and CEO of SCANA from 1990 to 1997. He also served on the Clemson University board of trustees for 18 years, including as its chairman.

Gressette also was a past president of the United Way of the Midlands.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, at Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, in Columbia. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. at the church.
