Outdoors lovers, take note.

Next year, Augusta will turn into a sportsman’s paradise as both Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops open massive specialty stores, just a little more than an hour’s drive from Columbia.

Three years ago, S.C. lawmakers shot down plans to offer tax incentives to bring a Bass Pro Shops to the Upstate. But, earlier this year, Cabela’s said it would open one of its massive stores in Greenville.

A Cabela’s Outpost also is planned for next spring on the south side of I-20 on Riverwatch Parkway in Augusta, according to a press release from the company.

The 42,000-square-foot fishing-and-outdoor-gear outfitter is less than half the size of the mega-store announced earlier this year for Greenville, Cabela’s first S.C. location. But it will have a similar “surrounded by the outdoors” feel, for which the store is known.

Customers also will be able to order products at in-store online kiosks and pick up ordered items without having to pay shipping costs.

The Sidney, Neb.-based company will employ about 90 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees at the Augusta location.

Bass Pro Shops also said this week that it would open a store in Augusta – at the intersection of I-20 and Flowing Wells Road – late next year or in early 2015. That is about 12 miles from the Cabela’s location.

The 50,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops Outpost will combine retail with entertainment, as well as conservation and outdoor education, the company said in a press release. It will sell fishing-and-hunting gear, as well as clothing and equipment for hiking, backpacking, wildlife viewing, camping and outdoor cooking. A gift-and-nature center will feature outdoor-related home decor, including lamps, dishes, bird feeders and furniture, the company said.

Bass Pro Shops already has one S.C. store, in Myrtle Beach. The company is known for its boat showroom and outdoors feel brought inside through log and rock work, indoor aquariums and other water features.
