With summer coming to a close, it’s time to take a tax holiday on back-to-school shopping.

This weekend, S.C. shoppers will save state and local sales taxes on school supplies – ranging from pens and paper to laptops and sweaters. Savings start Friday morning and run through Sunday night.

Shoppers will save 8 percent in Richland County and 7 percent in Lexington County. That means families who spend the national average of about $635 on back to school can save roughly $51 in Richland and $44 in Lexington.

Traditionally, stores sweeten the incentives by offering sales during the tax-free weekend, the third busiest shopping period of the year. The Devine Street merchants’ association, for example, will hold a sidewalk sale Friday and Saturday, offering up to 90 percent off select items.
