Though the opening of the downtown Columbia Main Street location of Famous Toastery is just over a year behind schedule, there is an end in sight and a tentative opening month set, according to a company spokesperson.
“Construction is set to begin in early 2018 and the restaurant time line to open is by May,” a spokesperson told The State.
What can customers can look forward to once the restaurant does open? According to CEO and founder Robert Maynard, Famous Toastery will have really fast service, a grab-and-go section and online ordering. The food will be faster than going to a fast casual spot making the speed of service and delivery super fast compared to other restaurants downtown, according to Maynard.
Famous Toastery has already opened a location on Sparkleberry Lane in Northeast Columbia. In January of last year, commercial real estate firm Arnold Companies developers announced that Famous Toastery would be opening a location in the former Moe Levy’s location at Assembly and Lady Streets. Due to significant structural issues with that location, however, that lease was terminated in August of 2016 and the local franchise owner signed a lease for the former Atlanta Bread Co. location in the 1300 block of Main Street downtown--also an Arnold Companies property. Atlanta Bread Co. closed that location last December.
Famous Toastery opened shop in Huntersville, N.C., in 2005 and franchised in 2013. The eatery now has eight locations in North Carolina and two in South Carolina — in Tega Cay and Indian Land. The franchise has a dozen more restaurants scheduled to roll out in the Carolinas — and one in New York — during the next year.
