The Leapfrog Group released its annual hospital safety grades last week, and grades were up for three of the four public hospitals in Richland and Lexington counties.

Grades for Palmetto Health Baptist, Palmetto Health Richland and Providence Hospitals all improved to B from C. Lexington Medical Center remained in the A grade category.

The grades are based on 28 safety-related statistics compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and from a survey by Leapfrog. Hospital industry leaders in South Carolina say these sorts of surveys have value, but they don’t always provide the entire picture. They suggest people choosing a hospital consider multiple sources, including their physicians.
