U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a Democratic presidential primary candidate, appeared at the King at the Dome event on Jan. 18, 2016. Two other Democratic hopefuls, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, also were to attend the the annual Martin Luther King Jr. observance. Started in 2000 to protest the Confederate flag flying on the State House dome, King Day has drawn as many as 50,000 participants and as few as 1,000. Jamie Self jself@thestate.com
