A nearly 2-month-old baby girl was left at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital on Monday, the state Department of Social Services said in a news release.
The abandonment of the African-American infant born July 21, 2016, is covered under “Daniel’s Law.” Under that law, if a baby is “abandoned” in a safe place within 60 days of birth and has not been harmed, the person leaving the child does not have to identify her or himself and cannot be prosecuted.
A court hearing is planned for Oct. 17 to free the baby for adoption, DSS said. If the baby’s parents want to assert parental rights, they can do so then.
Under Daniel’s Law, a safe haven is defined as a hospital or hospital outpatient facility, law enforcement agencies, fire stations, EMS stations or a house of worship during the time the church, mosque or synagogue is staffed.
