The Columbia Police Department is celebrating an excellence award the agency received by the state’s law enforcement association on Tuesday.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Association honored the Columbia Police Department with the Santee Cooper Excellence in Law Enforcement Award. Previous winners include the Charleston Police Department in 2015 and the Aiken Department of Public Safety in 2014, according to reports.
The award aims to recognize the overall activities and achievements of an entire law enforcement agency or department, according to the association’s awards information page. Qualifications that are taken into consideration for the award include the agency’s effort, innovative service to the community, efficiency and results, the page said.
“Receiving this award is an acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of our department,” said Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook. “It signifies the progress we have made in implementing best practices in 21st century policing and building strong relationships with those we serve.”
The department will celebrate receiving the award at 1 Justice Square in Columbia on Thursday with a barbecue between 11 a.m., and 1 p.m.
