There was a chill in the air, but romance too, as two young women with ties to the military got to sprint toward five beautiful wedding gowns and claim one as their own.
Brianna Fossell of West Columbia and Genise Dopson of Hardeeville were the only participants in the “Military Run for the Dress” Sunday sponsored by the USC chapter of the Association for Wedding Professionals and the St. Andrews Woman’s Club, which hosted its annual bridal showcase at the State Fairgrounds.
“They are gorgeous; they all have trains,” said Annette Hoover, an organizer who teaches wedding planning and management at USC’s school of hospitality, retail and tourism management. Four young women from Greenville had also signed up for the run, but she feared icy weather in the Upstate had prevented their arrival.
That meant Fossell, a Richland County EMS employee engaged to Air National Guardsman William Carlson, and Dopson, herself a member of the Air National Guard, had an exuberant, laughing sprint to the dresses donated by local bridal shops.
There was more laughter and confusion as they ran into the plastic garment bags and lunged for the dresses.
“She ran into the wrong dress,” Fossell laughed.
Then the fun began as they went inside to try them on.
