Richland County residents living in low-lying areas will get discounts on their flood insurance premiums because of local government initiatives.

The county participates in a voluntary national program that encourages communities to alleviate damage and loss from floods. As a result, an estimated 1,370 property owners will save 5 percent to 10 percent on their premiums, a news release from Richland County stated.

In addition to lowering flood insurance rates, the county’s efforts enhance public safety, reduce damage to property and avoid economic loss, it said.
