Thanks to a $5,000 donation from BlueCross BlueShield of S.C., more than 100 children from low-income families in the Midlands will get a chance to learn to swim through the Swim Lessons Foundation.

The new nonprofit organization wants “to ensure that no children in the Midlands drown because their families can’t afford to enroll in a quality learn-to-swim program,” said Jim Reiser, co-founder of the foundation and owner of The Swim Lesson Company.

The first round of subsidized lessons will begin Jan. 14. Any family that qualifies for free or reduced lunch at school also qualifies for the free swim lessons. Applications for the lessons and an income verification form can be found online at www.swimlessonsfoundation.org.
