New Life Fitness World closes its doors

After 25 years of helping members get in better shape, New Life Fitness World is leaving the Columbia market.

After 25 years of helping members get in better shape, New Life Fitness World is leaving the Columbia market.

All four Midlands locations — two in Columbia and one each in Lexington and Irmo — closed Tuesday and will not reopen.

“We want to thank the community for letting us service their fitness needs,” said Jea Jung, a spokesman for the Iowa-based company.

Jung said the decision to close four of the company’s five locations — only the home gym in Iowa remains — was made because the company’s owner and founder wanted to step back from the business. He estimates about 80 employees were laid off by the closures.

But Jung said he hopes the gym members will keep working out. New Life formed an alliance with Gold’s Gym, and contracts signed with New Life will be honored at five Midlands Gold’s locations — three in Columbia, one in Irmo and one in Lexington.

The decision to partner with Gold’s, Jung said, was made because the gym has locations convenient to New Life members.

Bonnie Cogswell, a manager with Gold’s Gym’s Midlands’ locations, said her company looks forward to working with new clients. She said she hopes those clients renew their contracts with Gold’s when time runs out.

“As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed — other than where you go to work out,” she said.

New Life members who do not wish to continue with Gold’s and want to cancel their contracts should call New Life at (319) 551-7750.
