A man threatening to harm himself at the I-26 bridge in Harbison prompted local law enforcement to shut down traffic in both directions of the major traffic artery in the middle of rush hour traffic Thursday evening.

Cars backed up for several miles in both directions radiatiing from the Harbison Boulevard (Irmo) exit.

Columbia Police Department crisis negotiators were brought to the scene, department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

“CPD negotiators convinced the man to not physically harm himself at the I-26 bridge in Harbison. Headed to hospital. Traffic should be resuming soon,” she tweeted at 8:30 p.m.
