Camden moonshine distillery opens for business Saturday

Apple-pie moonshine, handmade bourbon and other spirits will soon come to downtown Camden.
But in the meantime, customers of Dark Water Distillery will have to settle for simple 100-proof, 100 percent corn moonshine.
The new business, which celebrates a grand opening on Saturday at 923 Broad St. in Camden, is owned by Carl Monday, a veteran, a federal detective and fourth-generation distiller.
“People always have a passion for creating something that’s their own, and I wanted to give people something unique that they couldn’t get anywhere else in Camden,” Monday said in a press release.
Dark Water sells straight moonshine but will soon begin producing moonshine flavors including apple pie, cherry, peach and muscadine. In the future, the distillery will produce bourbon, gin, vodka and tequila. All will be made on a 50-gallon still.
“There’s a growing interest in small-batch moonshine,” said Wade Luther, economic development director for Camden in the release. “Having this unique business locate in downtown Camden will be a great boost for our local economy and a new social venue for citizens and visitors to enjoy.”
