It’ll cost a bit more to dine out, take a prepared meal home from a supermarket or grab a snack in Cayce starting Oct. 1.

City Council gave the go-ahead Wednesday to adding a 2 percent tax on those purchases to help pay for operation of the local museum in operation and upkeep of the path along the Congaree River.

Revenue from the tax – estimated at $251,000 a year initially – will ease a financial pinch, freeing up money for city leaders to devote to public safety.

Cayce is the only community in Lexington County with a tax also collected in adjoining Richland County and Columbia.
