SUMTER, SC A man who has been missing for almost a week has been found safe in a swampy area in Sumter county, officials say.
Fredric Matthews Richburg, 52, of Sumter, was reported missing Aug. 4 by an acquaintance who told authorities that Richburg may be in need of medication.
Richburg was found at about 7:52 p.m. Sunday in an area off Lewis Road between Kingsbury Drive and U.S. 15 after a nearby fisherman heard the man yelling, officials with the Sumter Police Department said in a statement released Sunday night.
He is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries after being rescued from the area by local firefighters. Police, Sumter County sheriff’s deputies and officers with the state Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene.
Police think Richburg might have been in the swampy area since Monday morning, when he was last seen leaving his Miller Arms apartment on foot.
Officers were concerned about his well-being given he might have been without his prescription medications.
