A Greenville man has died after a tire on the vehicle he was traveling in blew out early Monday morning on I-26, officials say.

Theron M. Allen, 32, died on the scene, Orangeburg County Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said in a statement released Monday.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. near mile marker 156 on the interstate. Allen was one of six people traveling west in the vehicle when the tire blew.

The driver lost control and ran slightly off the left side of the road, according to Lance Cpl. Judd Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Allen was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene. A 14-year-old and a 19-year old passenger were also ejected.

The 14-year old was flown to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia along with a 9-year-old passenger. Two 19-year-olds were taken to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

All had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Jones said.

The driver of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries.

Jones said the interstate was blocked for two hours during the incident.

The SC Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

The Orangeburg Times and Democrat contributed to this report.
